Labor Day

Monday, Sept. 6 [National Holiday]

Labor Day is the day Americans pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of our workers. It's a national public holiday so kids and parents usually have the day off of school and work. Now is a great chance to fire up the BBQ or relax by the lake to celebrate the end of summer with one last family gathering. If you're looking for another fun activity, you may like the 1st Annual Labor Day Festival in Washington, GA. National Day of Service and Remembrance

Sept. 11th is a day to reflect on the devastating 2001 attacks that changed our country so much. Main Street Elberton is hosting a September 11th Memorial Event in Downtown Elberton's City Square. National Grandparents Day

Sunday, Sept. 12

This is a special day to celebrate our grandparents. If your parents or grandparents live nearby, spend time showing them just how important they truly are to your family. If you can't see them in person this year, plan ahead to call or send a card. I put together an article with more inspiration for celebrating Grandparents Day using crafts, quality time together, and a few questions that are sure to put a smile on their face!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Sept. 15-Oct. 15

Let's celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of our friends from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Betty Sanchez, a former Macaroni Kid publisher in California shared this delicious recipe for Arroz con Leche, or Mexican rice pudding, during Hispanic Heritage Month. This authentic recipe comes from Betty's mother and grandmothers, passed down to her while growing up in Nayarit, Mexico. It looks so delicious and seems like the perfect dessert for fall... sign me up!

Yom Kippur

Wednesday-Thursday, Sept. 15-16

Yom Kippur is the “Day of Atonement” when Jews around the world reflect on their sins from the past year and ask for forgiveness. The focus of the Yom Kippur holiday is introspection and connecting to your religion. To do that, Jews fast from sundown the night before to sundown the night of Yom Kippur.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Sunday, Sept. 19

Ahoy, Matey! Have fun and talk like a pirate today. It's the one day of the year when you have a good excuse to say "pirate's booty", "poop deck" and shout "Who took my buried treasure!?" This year, this special day falls on a Sunday. I highly recommend sharing this holiday with your pastor or friends at church. And if you have a little pirate in your family, don't forget to give them a hug. Arrrrghh!

As summer slips away into fall, the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler. Good Neighbor Day

Tuesday, Sept. 28

Last but not least, let's celebrate our neighbors! In modern society, it's becoming more and more rare to actually socialize with our neighbors. At the very least, I hope that you get along and can ask for help if you need it. I enjoy going for a walk and talking to my neighbors who are outside doing yard work, walking their dog, or checking the mail. It only takes a minute to say hello and brighten up their day!

How can you be a good neighbor? 1) Wave and say hello when you see them, 2) Work together to help another neighbor in need of yard work or gardening, 3) Lend tools for a special project so they can get the job done easier.
