The Play That Goes Wrong is a play within a play – and one that goes horribly off the rails! Part Monty Python, part Sherlock Holmes, this comedy is guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter! Rated PG for adult themes.
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Bob Larson, the director of this upcoming play in Elberton, Georgia. He shared his reason for choosing to bring this comedy to our local theatre, "We saw The Play That Goes Wrong in Greenville, SC several years ago and I laughed so much that my jaws felt sore. I wanted to bring this play to Elberton because everybody needs a good laugh and you'll definitely be laughing from this!"

The play takes place opening night of the Cornley Drama Society’s newest production, The Murder at Haversham Manor, where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. This 1920's whodunit has everything you never wanted in a show—an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, a set that's falling apart, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines). Nevertheless, the accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences!
A fun and unusual fact: the number of stagehands behind the scenes outnumbers the actors on stage! Director Bob Larson shared, "We have 8 actors and 12 stagehands, not to mention lighting and sound technicians... that's 20 active cast and crew. They are all exceeding my expectations. We will rehearse for 13 weeks (rather than the typical 8-week schedule) because there's so much to practice... And it all has to be done with precision to bring the stage to life."

The Play That Goes Wrong has an extremely complex set and rather than building it themselves, it was more practical to purchase it from another theatre and make some modifications. "We had some volunteers travel to Clayton Community Theater in Missouri, rent a U-HAUL truck, and bring the entire set back to Elberton, in pieces. We had to make some modifications to make it shorter, move light bars, and tie up the valances to get it to fit, " Director Bob Larson recalled.
After all, this play sounds like a great comedy and I'm glad it's heading to the Elbert Theatre soon. If you're still asking yourself, "Should I go see The Play That Goes Wrong?" Absolutely...maybe once, twice, or three times, just don't miss it! Bob Larson suggests, "I would plan to see it both weekends! You may find yourself laughing so much the first time that you might miss something. Come back again just to catch everything that's going on!"
