As a thoughtful parent of three young kids, I am constantly searching for inspirational stories to entertain and educate my children. Macie and the Magic Veggies by Peter Contardo is a delightful addition to our home library and a wonderful story about community, empathy, and veggies! Through this enlightening experience, Macie discovers that the true magic behind her vegetables goes far beyond soil and sunshine—it’s the love, care, and deep connection to nature that make every harvest special.

In our recent interview, the author, Peter Contardo shared his motivation for creating this heartfelt story that bridges the gap between children and the origins of their food, making the journey from farm to table both magical and educational.
Peter Contardo has a unique background that blends creativity with a deep passion for education and sustainability. Originally a video storyteller and marketing strategist, Peter spent years crafting engaging content that made brands relatable and fun. In 2018, he made a significant life change by moving to a 10-acre farm, driven by a desire to connect more deeply with nature and hands-on living.
"I wanted to instill in children a deep appreciation for nature and healthy living." Peter explained, "I believe it is crucial for the next generation to understand where their food comes from, value the people who work hard to provide it, and recognize the important role we all play in helping each other and the planet."
This transition was inspired further by the joyous news of becoming a grandparent, leading Peter to focus on creating meaningful stories for the next generation. Peter’s love for his granddaughter Macie became the cornerstone of his new venture—the Macieverse. He envisioned a series of children’s stories that would teach valuable lessons about farming, sustainability, and healthy living through the eyes of a curious young girl.
This vision came alive in Macie and the Magic Veggies, a book that entertains while imparting essential lessons to children. Peter’s goal is to foster a sense of responsibility, empathy, and environmental awareness in a way that connects with his young audience. Through Macie’s adventures, he aims to inspire children—and the adults who guide them, including parents, teachers, and caregivers—to explore, learn, and grow with a love for nature. By emphasizing the positive impact small actions can have, Peter encourages fans of Macie to take meaningful steps to care for themselves, their families, and their communities.

A Personal Touch at Home
We brought Macie and the Magic Veggies into our book collection and home library, and it quickly became a favorite bedtime story for my kids. My 3-year-old son was so enthralled by Macie’s farm adventure that he asked me to read the book to him three times! The vibrant illustrations and rhyming storyline entertain and spark his curiosity about gardening, nature, and the importance of taking care of our planet. We sat together as a family and talked about food production in our rural community, all inspired by Macie’s adventures on the farm.
I also love that the author's website is full of free downloadable activities and animated audiobook (!!!) where kids can see how Macie first discovered her favorite veggies…carrots!
